He’d sing like he was picking his nose and he was more concentrated on swivelling his hips than singing. I’m not knocking Zeppelin. I just expected more because the Yardbirds had a great singer in Keith Relf. He didn’t dazzle you with his hips. ’ That was exactly what Malcolm had in mind. Malcolm: ‘I came in one day and I said [to Angus], “How’s things, anyway? ” “Ah, it’s not really happening.

Rehearsals were on Sundays, or more regularly as the need arose, in a scout hall next to busy Concord Road in Rhodes adjacent to a major bridge, the same place Malcolm rehearsed in. When they really wanted to tighten up they would shift into the hall’s small kitchen where the sound wouldn’t be lost. Malcolm was the tiny guitar virtuoso and impressively and quite effortlessly tore his way through songs by Bloodwyn Pig, Savoy Brown, Black Sabbath, The Animals, Eric Clapton in his 22 Bluesbreakers period, as well as virtually all of Cream’s first album and Are You Experienced? by Jimi Hendrix. It was all blues based and slightly left field, nothing from the radio playlists of the day. As radio friendly as they got was The Beatles’ Come Together. ’ Songs were often sketched out in Malcolm’s bedroom and then given some volume at a scout hall at Rhodes in Sydney’s inner-north, which they’d break into and occasionally sleep in.
